Kirk cousins has made Justin Jefferson laugh. Jefferson remembers what he said, but won’t tell us until we’re older.
“Those jokes are just for laughs at this point,” Jefferson said with a chuckle. “Maybe when I’m a little older I’ll take them out of the bag.”
Curious, I pressed. What could cousins have said that made you laugh?
“I can’t tell y’all, man,” Jefferson insisted. ‘You know what I mean? It won’t be a joke. You know what I mean? I want it to be later, when I’m older, and I can come over here and tell you the joke.
“And then it gets really funny. But if I tell it now, it won’t be funny.’
It’s probably a dad joke. We’re talking about Kirk cousinsfinally. He is dad joke personified. Kohl’s Cash is its crypto. He’s the alpha goober and corny humor is his love language.
But what could Cousins have said to Jefferson that was so funny that Jets kept it in his black box? Do we have to wait until he lands the plane and reminisces about his playing days to hear it? What if he sends MH370 upon us and retreats to a life of solitude on the bayou?
We may never find out.
Cousins didn’t just pass on jokes; he helped mold Jefferson as a player. He always popular Jefferson to avoid ‘alligator arms’. Cousins told Jefferson to reach for the ball even when he knew an opponent was going to hit him. He too emphasized finishing plays. Cousins asked Jefferson to drive to the end zone, which guaranteed a score instead of relying on a red zone attack.
Most of all, Jefferson appreciated how much effort Cousins put into preparing for games.
“There are a lot of jokes I learned from Kirk,” Jefferson said. “But just seeing him and seeing his daily routine and seeing how he comes to work every day and how he’s in the playbook and how he studies hard every day and how he’s in the ‘book’ so much. I love that about him, and just his work ethic and him as a person are always great.
Jefferson also liked that he could be himself around Cousins.
“It’s always great to have a quarterback that you can joke around with and be yourself with,” Jefferson said. “Just to have his locker next to mine and talk to him every day and be with him every day. It was definitely a great experience.”
Jefferson respects Cousins but has not spoken to him since signed with the Atlanta Falcons.
“Not really,” Jefferson said. “We’ll probably share one or two messages, thanking him for the start and everything.
“But I always respect Kirk and will always be grateful for what he did for me. So I feel like I didn’t even have to share that message with him. He already knows how I feel about him.”
Cousins’ most famous pass to Jefferson was the miracle catch in Buffalo. His favorite, however, was his first touchdown catch against the Tennesee Titans in Week 3.
“I feel like my first touchdown will always be memorable,” he said. “Just the whole atmosphere of COVID, being first in the league and not having fans in the stadium. And because it was my first start and I had 175 meters, the whole ordeal was just crazy.
“And since this is my first touchdown, I feel like that catch will always be remembered.”
Jefferson’s success feels inevitable given his natural skill and running style. Still, Cousins helped him become the player he is today. Whether reminding him not to have alligator arms or telling him an alligator joke, Jefferson feels he has something to take away. Something he thinks will grow over the years.
